Head out to my store to get these Akili ni Mali (Swahili for Mind is Wealth) stickers

‎Hey hey beautiful people,

It is mental health awareness week and everyone has their advocacy suit on. If you are joining the advocacy party, you might want to read this throwback piece 'How to tell a mental health story' Speaking of pieces, I have done one - an oped - in line with this year's mental health day theme - mental health and the workplace. The oped should be out today or tomorrow and I will definitely feature it here.

Check out my World Mental Health Day oped from last year which was syndicated on four Kenyan newspapers

Since all my tips on how work spaces can get into the mental health vibe is on the oped I wrote - and I am waiting to be published - I would like to do a shout out to the amazing organisations in Kenya that have been doing mental health and epilepsy advocacy over the years.

You can also check out mental health services providers in Abuja, Nigeria as well as crisis lines across Africa and my tips for Interns / Volunteers looking to get into the mental health space

Kindly note that epilepsy is not a mental health condition but a neurological one, I always put them together because of my dual diagnosis. I will definitely do a second take of this post when I introduce the new organisations in the field, but today, enjoy the veterans that I have interacted with over the years.

  1. Me, me, me -  In a nut shell, I provide the necessary mental health information and linkages to various groups of people.  You can read more about me and my work here
  2. Directorate of Mental Health at Ministry of Health - policy, legislation, coordinate national mental health activities
  3. Basicneeds Kenya - community mental health and livelihoods for people living with epilepsy and mental health conditions
  4. USPKenya - mental health support group meetings in various Kenyan towns and advocacy for people with mental health conditions and their families, legislation, disability movement, CPRD
  5. Africa Mental Health Foundation - big on mental health research
  6. Kamili - runs mental health clinics
  7. Caritas Nyeri - out of town (Nairobi town) experience on mental health advocacy, support groups and livelihood
  8. Youth on the Move - year long fellowship for youth living with epilepsy, monthly support group meetings for parents and youth living with epilepsy
  9. KAWE - runs weekly epilepsy clinics
  10. Afya Research - run an epilepsy telemedicine program

A few National Hospitals worth checking - Mathari Hospital - Nairobi, Port Reitz - Mombasa, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital - Eldoret,

I will definitely keep updating this list but for now, I just wanted to say a big thank you to these organisations for the amaaaazing work they have done in the field over the years.
